Here are a few of the overwhelmingly positive letters that keep coming in...

Note: I will not print your letter if it contains any negative comments directed at Vermonters; be reasonable and creative in your tone and show us all some respect, (only valid arguments about why this vote should not have happened are acceptable), ranting will get you blocked. Please realize that the residents of Brattleboro (the 2000 or so) that voted on this, do not represent all Vermonters.

This vote is a direct response to the lies and destruction of the IRAQ state by a pre-emptive war, and the disregard of the environment. This vote highlights the fact that our leader is responsible for the erosion of our civil liberties and the mounting national debt that is bankrupting our economy.

This vote has nothing to do with hating America, or being unpatriotic or Bin Laden, and please know that this vote is not an action that would lead to war on Vermont, deportation, massive bombings or support of dictatorships and terrorism around the world; as some letter writers sadly suggest.

This vote has to do with the president not being honest in his administrations quest for WAR. An unnecessary war. A war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, and continues today.

When a president misleads our country and pushes for war against the better judgement of the CIA and the Pentagon, and against the wishes of the rest of the world; invading a country where the US installed a dictatorship, simply to control the oil in that part of the world while claiming that we need to fight terrorism (which was not an issue at the time), that president - whomever he or she is, deserves to be called to the mat, and held accountable.

It is not acceptable to lie to the people of the United States. It makes no difference that we are at war now and the argument that we should support our troops and our president is faulty, because this president has put us all in harms way. I support the troups, lets bring all of them home.

To the citizens of Battleboro,

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Even if your petition and vote to arrest President Bush and Vice President Cheney is merely symbolic, it speaks loudly to all the citizens of our country who agree with you. Your actions make me want to visit Vermont for vacation, once it warms up of course. :-)
Thanks Again
DD - Tampa Bay, Florida.

God Bless you all for your meaningful gesture regarding Bush & Cheney. I am Canadian and therefore have no right to involve myself in American politics, however, I am excited by your voice which speaks to the world and declares that decency, peacefulness and justice have survived despite the brutal boot and cynical contempt of the current US Administration.
Thank you.

Bravo, Brattleboro!
May I add one more "attaboy" to the chorus? Although my aging bones resist living in snow again, it's tempting to pack a bag and move there. I'd feel truly American again, I'm sure. Heartfelt hugs to you all, and congratulations to Vermont for sheltering true patriots.
MK

Dear Daniel at Brattleboro,
For the first time in many years I am proud to be an American and so it is with the greatest respect that I salute your town's actions today!
Aggressive War, Unreasonable search and seizure, unlawful detention, TORTURE for God's sake torture! and the list goes on and on.... These men are criminals, let's face it!

Now we must turn back the slow encroachment of laws that threaten our liberty as surely as the tyranny of these despots.

Thankfully it is the nature of America that it only takes a few people with backbones to prop us all up.

Sincerely,
DH - Malvern, PA

Brattleboro - we love you! We are coming this summer to say hi and to spend some money!
We've been there before and loved it then - now even MORE so!!
P.S. Are you printing up any tee shirts? I'd love to order a few.
R and T - Chicago, Illinois.

Good for you all - hurrah. I live in the state of Oklahoma. I won't badmouth my home state but you all must be very proud. Bush and Cheney should be charged with war crimes here in this nation. I do not know why we are, as a nation, so blind about what they have done to us. It is just a shame.

I am 57 years old, my soninlaw has been in Iraq three times - he's there now. I believe this man is hitler incarnate and I don't believe in reincarnation. I better stop cuz I can't talk nice about him/cheney at all.

I keep hoping Bush hears what I think of him. He is not welcome on my land.

Thank you Brattleboro!!!
You've just proved that your spines and ethics are fully functional. The crimes of the Bush administration are many and the consequences so far have been nil. I've been pestering our city council to support an impeachment resolution, but only have one or two who seem interested. "It is not the purview of the city council . . ." is the prevailing sentiment. I say that's a load of crap. It is the purview of every American citizen!!!
Thanks for boldly showing the way.
CK - Lawrence, KS

Please pass this on to the Brattleboro town Board:
Telluride, Colorado voted to impeach Bush + Cheney. And we are very proud of that, and I am very proud of your town as well - Way to go!

Way to speak up and tell the truth. They (Bush & Co) are violators of our US constitution and they should both be tried for war crimes as well.
Regards
- Molly

Dear Brattleboro Selectmen,
Your town's vote to indict George Bush and Dick Cheney for crimes against the constitution was like a breathe of sanity in the insane country we have become. What a shame and disgrace Congress cannot find its way to lead the charge.

Thank you so much for having the courage to make your voices heard.
Best Regards,
JM

Don't know if this is the right address to send it but I wish to thank your community for standing up to tyranny when our congress seems to have forgotten how.
BH, Los Angeles Ca.

To whom it may concern,
I realize this issue may be a little old, but I wanted to take this opportunity to voice my appreciation for the conviction and courage of the good people of Battleboro. Standing up against the Bush/Cheney dictatorship is risky. Not too long ago, if your community would have voted in such a manner, you would have all mysteriously disappeared off the face of the planet. You still may! But I digress.

Thank you for standing up for what is right. I hope your actions encourage other communities to do the same.? Then maybe, Congress will strap on a pair and do what they were elected to do two years ago. Sincerely,
KA
Salem, Oregon

I am so proud of the wise residents of Brattleboro for voting to arrest Bush and Cheney for their crimes against the Constitution. You are patriots in the best sense of the word.

The crimes these two have perpetrated on MY country and the world should have been dealt with through impeachment. It's obvious that our elected representatives don't have the personal integrity to do it, so it's a testament to the greatness of our people that you did it locally.

Thank you for speaking for so many of us.
-KR

Congratulations! to you and the people of Brattleboro, and I heard today maybe also Marlboro
I hope you are the first of many to take this stand against what Bush and Chaney have done to our country and it's reputation. I'd love to see them at the Hague trying to defend their decisions on Iraq and torture.
-RB

I'm not sure if I'm sending this letter to the correct office, and if not, I hope that is forwarded to the proper inbox.
Amongst many others across the U.S., I would like to congratulate the people of Brattleboro for their decision to openly point the finger at the Bush Administration in their vast crimes against Americans and most others worldwide. It is unfortunate that Bush and Cheney will most likely make it to the end of this term, but hopefully at some point they will be convicted for the atrocities they have committed. It is also sad to see people such as John Long from Under-A-Rock Normal, Illinois suggesting you move to Venezuela just for being TRUE patriots, which is NOT what Mr. Long is. A true patriot stands up against the injustices of their government, which is exactly what your town has done. If he wants to live in a nation that represses it's citizens and violates their civil rights, HE oughta move to another country... He, and anti-patriots like him, could move to Iraq!! And to suggest that your actions have endangered our country and our soldiers is... well, stupid, for lack of a better word. Whether or not your indictment has an effect on Bush and Cheney in no way spells danger for anyone. As a matter-of-fact, the most dangerous thing for Americans and our soldiers is for Bush and Cheney to STAY in office, but you all already knew that.
Keep fighting the good fight taking place in our own nation, and stay strong!

Letter to add to your website
Please add this letter to your proudly displayed letters of support for your treasonous act of symbolically indicting the President and Vice President of the United States.

I would like to say that I believe in free speech and debate but your actions have put more Americans and soldiers lives at risk with your ridiculous charade. Why the need for attention? Why doe's your town need to put its selfish ideology ahead of the lives of our brave soldiers?

I suggest you start contacting Hugo Chavez for your oil and electricity needs because I am willing to bet you will reap consequences from this that your "special" town deserves. Better yet, why don't all of you pack up and move your precious little town to Venezuela and live in a country that is better suited for your town.

God Bless America!

Hey Ho Folks, there are many in my small redneck hick town in the sierras that are proud of your town's decision to arrest the war criminals in who occupy the white house. All we ask is that you include rumbsvelt, ashcroft, rove and gonzolaz. You may also arrest the b*****d for pulling off the media event called 911 I hope you know, ( 911mysteries.com; AE911truth.com ) all the best to you and your town folk.

Dear Daniel,

I've been longing to move to Brattleboro for some time, but have been unable to do so as yet. Every once in awhile I browse Brattleboro sites, and happened across your letter at the Brattleboro.com about the imprisonment article proposed to the Board of Selectman. Then I read some of the letters in response to it. I have to tell you, Daniel, that I more than ever admire Brattleboro - though I may never get to live there, I esteem so highly the community's conscience, courage and integrity. To me, they epitomize the spirit of New England. I wish you and the community all good times and applaud your decency

Respectfully,
JW - CT.

Dear Sir:
Heard about your town's plan to arrest the president. Sounds like a good call to me. Keep up the good work.

-Williams College

I am not sure where to send this, but this was the only email I could find on the town's website. I just read an article (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23037641/) discussing the proposal by your town to issue arrest warrants for President Bush and VP Cheney and I cannot applaud that enough!

President Clinton was impeached for lying about a private, extra-marital affair which was really no business but his and his wife's. President Bush and co.'s lies and manipulations have driven this country into a downward spiral and caused the incalculable loss of life around the world - yet no one even says "boo!" to them! How can this be? Are we so suppressed and afraid that we forget how and why this country was built?

I say arrest them!
Chicago, IL

I am writing to give my heartfelt support to the petition you are discussing in your upcoming town meeting concerning President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

The lies, deception and fear-mongering this duo and their respective "regimes" in office have perpetrated on our great nation will go down in history as one of our nation's blackest periods! They have repeatedly lied to the nation for what I believe is a misguided sense of justice in Bush along with personal gain for Cheney. As bad as the lies have been, is the way in which they have stifled any expression of the American right of "freedom of expression"! Until recently those of us who opposed this regime (and I might add there was a significant number of folks voting against them in 2004) were called 'shameful' and most disturbing 'unpatriotic' simply for disagreeing with their ideas and attempting to vocally say so. The policy of this regime has been to attack and discredit any who have not explicitly agreed with their neo-conservative and imperialistic ideals. So who is being 'Unpatriotic or Un-American"?

This nation was founded on liberty and freedom for all. With a clear separation of church and state. You are free to be conservative, liberal, libertarian - you name it. But that only works if you are "free to be..." This is not the case of a President not performing outstanding work in his tenure such as Jimmy Carter. An honest man that perhaps is better suited to a life of academic/diplomat as he leads now and not leader of the free world. Our history is riddled with Presidents good and bad - or perhaps more accurately - effective and ineffective. This is a complete abuse of power, knowingly, willingly and with malice by the current White House!

I cried the day in 2004 Bush was reelected. And I have never been particularly emotional about an election before. I felt too many Americans were mislead by his lies and would never have voted that way if they knew what was coming in the next 4 years. I feared what would happen to our nation. My entire family save for myself and one niece and nephew voted for Bush again. A classic example of his "smoke and mirrors" and lying. Yet now, they all wish they had that vote back. And lest I be thrown into the same characterization of "wacky liberal" or "nutcase" that anyone who espouses these views automatically sails into. I have voted Republican more times in general elections than I have democrat. I am probably considered a "social liberal" but "fiscal and defense conservative". As I truly believe MOST of our great nation are as well. Find the middle of the scale with tolerant/moderate ideals and within a small margin of left and right of that you will find the majority of the good people of the United States of America. Unfortunately, our current President and Vice President are not even on the scale. They have charted new territory and driven the nation into the most fractured idealistic, spiritual and economic state we have seen for a good many, many years - if ever. It will be a very difficult road for whichever presidential nominee "wins" the Whitehouse next fall.

So, since your lovely small town has decided to remember that we are a democracy and exercise their rights! I have one thing to say to you....

" Bravo! You go Brattleboro!"

Fort Worth, TX

Good for you!! I hope you sent a copy of your letter on the democratic process to the Rosemount, MN citizen who horrified many of us with his venomous comments.

Regards,
Livingston, TX

You are thinking of arresting Bush and Cheney for crimes against the Constitution? Please tell me where I can send the check to help pay the legal fees. I'm serious!
Thank you for sticking your collective civic neck out to make us all think about the horror that is this administration.

DO NOT ALLOW THE CRY OF THE RETROGRADE REPUBLICAND TO INTIMIDATE YOU GUYS!! I AM GLAD SOMEONE HAD THE COURAGE TO DO SOMETHING OUT OF PRINCIPLES EVEN IF IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DO IT IN PRACTICE.

YOUR TOWN HAD MAKE ME PROUD AGAIN TO BE A CITIZEN OF THIS OLD USA.
PS DANIEL: OF COURSE YOU CAN PUBLISH MY LETTER IN THE WEB SITE!.. I CANNOT IMAGINE A BIGGER HONOR THAN THAT. LET EVERYONE WHO READ YOUR TOWN'S CRITICS THAT THERE ARE AMERICANS WHO ARE VERY PROUD OF THE ACTION THE PEOPLE IN YOUR TOWN HAD TAKEN. SPECIALLY BECAUSE IT IS A MATTER OF PRINCIPLES, WHICH I THINK NEITHER BUSH NOR CHENEY HAVE.. AT LEAST NOT THE PRINCIPLES OF FREEDOM.
-J AOL

I certainly will not be vacationing in Vermont any time soon. What an embarrassment to publish the fact that so many of your citizens do not support our President and Commander in Chief in war time.

CTG

Way to go Brattleboro VT!! It is refreshing to know that many others refuse to follow along like a heard of sheep. In my 73+ years, there has no worse bunch of hoodlums to occupy the white house.

Almost makes me wish I lived in Brattleboro, Vermont instead of sheep like Tennessee.

Great Work!
I laughed when I heard about your courageous move to open the possibility of holding the present administration accountable for their crimes against mankind. Great job. Congratulations for your courage.

To the Brave People of Brattleboro,
(also sent to the Chamber)
I don't care what others say, you are all doing the democratically right thing. I've heard it said that this is really a symbolic gesture. I only wish that more towns and state governments would at least push to have their actions investigated. They say Bush has never been to Vermont since becoming president. I don't blame him. The people of Vermont believe in the freedoms that is their birthright by order of The Constitution, and by the Sovereignty of their free state. Freedoms which Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney continuously seek to take away. I believe that these united States are quickly going to Hell in a hand basket, and I could only hope that I find myself in a place like Vermont when things fall apart.
The slurs and negative comments only prove that the government and the media have been successful in portraying Americans who believe in their constitutional rights, as fanatics, kooks, and extremist. When the average citizen or town takes up their rights and speaks out against politicians acting outside the constitution; the politicos, the media, and the "lied to" masses all join in to mark such acts as foolish and crazy.
You are all patriots standing up to tyranny, and God bless you for it. God bless Brattleboro and Vermont. Be safe. Live free.
-South Carolina

ARREST GEORGE AND CHENEY!!!

I read the news releases and am SO GLAD to hear of citizens taking some action.

Regards,

Because of your recent assault on the President of the United States I plan NEVER to visit or spend any more on anything that would benefit your town in anyway.

Just past midnight. Just saw what you all did down there. I love it. I bet you you are going to be overwhelmed with e-mails thanking you for your initiative. I am a tired 77 year old Belgian resident alien caregiver who lost her Parkinsonian American husband on November 15, 2006. I will try to find the energy some day to visit Brattleboro.

I heard part of the hearing about waterboarding this morning. I am aghast that what we in the Belgian resistance fought against is now happening in the US.
Hang in there. I just send the article to a Parkinsonian American activist in Arizona who will spread this all round the country.
By the way, I found out a few days ago in the Internet that Kissinger who has given this administration quite a lot of help and is now advising McCain can no longer go to some countries like France for example which is doing to him what you are doing to Cheney/Bush.
-Alexandria, VA

I am not sure if this is the correct address to send this message to, but I am going ahead with this email anyway. If this is the incorrect address, please forward it to the proper site.

I think you guys rock!

I view your decision to put King George and Darth Cheney on trial, for the criminal acts they have committed while in the Whitehouse, to be truly patriotic and fully American. I feel you are following in the footsteps of the Green Mountain Boys, rallying the rest of this country against the tyranny of the Republicans. Please ignore the knee-jerk vocalizations of the neo-conservative pinheads and proceed with this very important vote. It gives hope to the rest of us.

You have my full support.

Thank you,

Here, Here! Thank you (guys) for being the voice for so many Americans re: your petition to arrest/prosecute Bush & Cheney!

Honorably discharged (early 2001) veteran

The citizens of Battleboro should be commended for having the courage to stand up for what they believe. I will be planning a trip your way because I want to spend my travel dollars in a place that truly supports democracy.

-Sacramento, CA

Hopefully this is the right place to send an email supporting the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney!!! Way to go!! I wish more people in this country would move to impeach those two Bozos!!!

Some Positive Feedback from Texas!

I just wanted to tell you all thank you for your decision to draft legislation for the arrest of Bush and Cheney. In my house, which is a tiny blue oasis in the whole of a red state, you're heroes and your bravery in voicing your opinions is inspiring. Those people whose negativity you've been receiving are either blind, dumb, or evil. The actions of our President and Vice President are truly ugly, and the cowardice of so many Americans to dissent is pathetic. If only all those of differing opinions could be so brave as to find their voices like you have, what a different society we'd live in if they did. I reiterate, many thanks to you!

-A fan

Hooray! Finally a town with enough guts to stand against the 2 people who have done the most damage to this country, ever. I wholeheartedly support what you are doing and hope that you are able to encourage other municipalities to enact similar petitions. Don't let the morons who support Bush get you down.

Today I am proud to be an American

Hello,
Thanks to everyone for standing up for the constitution. I am afraid there may not be enough Americans who will stand up and voice what seems to be a minority opinion subject to ridicule by people who take it for granted. I have been vocal about it here in Maryland, and have been ridiculed, called a liberal when i am really the only conservative. Keeping the constitution intact is about as conservative as it gets, is it not!
Thanks again,

Congratulations to the leaders and citizens (and citizen leaders) of Brattleboro for a splendid use of the system of government... particularly in protest of the Misuse of the system of government! Does that make it ironic? Or just incredibly appropriate? LOL

Whether they support Bush or abhor him, I think any person who takes pride in being an American has got to applaud the community which takes the freedom of speech and the proper use of a public ballot seriously.

You've made my day, Brattleboro. I can't thank you enough.
Sincerely, XX

Well I only see one little problem with your petition, it is of course, unenforceable.

I'm quite sure that, given the current make-up of congress, President Bush would be impeached if there were any way to do so.

I served in the military to allow people to petition the government, assemble peacefully, etc..

I've noticed a different thing in our current political landscape. Republicans and Democrats used to disagree. Now they simply hate each other. No discussion, no intellectual debate, just hate.

I find this disturbing. I'm sure it has much to do with the media's hype machine, and of course, people who buy into it..

There is a Constitutional method for impeaching, then arresting a president. Perhaps your city should follow that method, if you care so much about the document.

Jim

Daniel - Please give my BRAVO to the Town of Brattleboro - I wish I was there to sign that petition!!! Vermont ROCKS!!!! D

I've always thought Vermont is my kind of state. With a son who has served two deployments in Iraq (and survived an IED) I'm firmly against Bush's war (and just about everything else he and Cheney have done). As I've watched the Administration behavior the last seven years, all I can do is shake my head and say, "Why didn't anybody listen to me in 2000?"

I applaud your stand! Vermont rocks!!
-A

Long live Brattleboro! The people who are emailing you are the same people who have no problem telling "Slick Willie" jokes & had no problem bashing our President THEN! I'm canceling my next vacation to Vegas & taking it in Vermont! Keep up the great work! C - Boise, ID

Hi Daniel,

I bet you have been flooded with comments, as yours is the only address found on your city's web page!

YOU GO, BRATTLEBORO! Democracy in action!

Although it is only symbolic since I don't live in your town, I had to let you know how much I support what you are doing! I only wish more cities would do the same thing!

I can't get my congressman to support legislation that has been brought forward to impeach! How sad is THAT?!? He tells me what a complete waste of time and distraction it would be at this point.

AT THIS POINT?!? Okay, let's give them yet ANOTHER YEAR to keep screwing our nation over, making it harder and harder to get back to the United States Of America that we all know and love (if we ever can!)! Let's just keep piling on the debt for our children and grandchildren and GREAT grandchildren to have to deal with! What is another year of young lives sent to Iraq to be wasted on this fool's folly?!? How many more back room deals can be made in a year? How many more expedited prisoners? How much more torture? How many more violations of the Geneva Convention? And how many more opportunities for them to slip legislation in a budget bill that exonerates their asses?!? (oops, 'scuse me, how'd that get in there?) How many more violations of our constitutional rights can they get by with?

So count me among the positive responses to what y'all are doing, okay? Keep up the good work!
Auburn, Washington

Arrest Bush and Cheney? Best idea I've heard in years. I heard you got a number of negative comments and can't figure out where their brains
are. I think they should have been impeached and criminally charged a long time ago. You GO. Too bad you wouldn't have much of a chance of
actually arresting them.

I hope I get the chance to visit your fine town someday.

There was no email address for arresting Bush so I'm sending it to
this one. If it should go elsewhere, please forward.

I absolutely support your town, in its efforts lately at seeing to it that the President and Vice President are impeached. It may only be symbolic,
but it's an important stand to take and those of us who are familiar with our Constitution and who support it, thank you.

PS. I have to tell you, I’d like to add that I would honestly go out of my way to visit your town, too, because of this action. Far from staying away, I’d make a point to go to Brattleboro, when I’m in the area. Besides being no doubt beautiful, you apparently are thoughtful and have some degree of integrity to your group and area.

Good luck to you all up there,

- Kansas City, Missouri

Thank-you for being a brave little town and standing up to monsters in our gov't. I will buy more syrup and whatever else I can find from Vermont not...because I know it is produced by good people. Sincerely, Cali

AND there is more...
